John my story is almost the same with my 84.  I haven't replaced the radiator though.  I had a mechanic look at it and he replaced the coolant bottles and the thermostat.  He also found gas in the oil, which he said would make it run hot. I can't drive 1 mile before I over heating.  I to am thinking of dumping my loved daily driver for a dependable VW.
