Could just be your time. in 180K I've broken 4th gear twice with the stock
engine.

    Today while getting onto the freeway  in my '87 syncro a new beetle
came up on my butt so I decided to rev out the 2.2 subie engine  I
converted it to a couple months ago.  I was doing pretty good for awhile
(downhill grade) untill I went to slam it into 4th but alas there was
none.  I had realized my worst fear and broke the 3/4 slider hub.  I
knew this day was coming as it has 165k on it, but it hurts a little
more knowing that my impetuous nature just cost me $2500.  Stupid
beetles.....
