The urethane bed liner trick will work well for sealing the old finish
off.

However---be ready for one hell of a time when you are ready to maintain
the bedliner finish--

It doesn't lay flat, it has texture to it, and will hold dirt, mold and
other critter's in it that will be hell to get off.

Bullet proof---yes
Easy to keep clean--nay, nay.
