From the "Never Overlook the Obvious" department:

I carried my bike to NM and back to KS on a $20 or $30 bike rack from Wal-Mart.  Stayed snug as a bug on the back of the Westy.  Didn't move an inch.  You can see the way I had the bike mounted on my home page.

PS... Looked over a new Eurovan Weekender at the local VW dealer yesterday.  Slick package.  Slick price.  $31k on the sticker!  I LOVE my $2500 Westy even more now!
