Sounds like the '85 model year is probably different.
The '90 mosquito screen in front of the pop top is square.
An excerpt from the '90 westfalia owner's manual:
"Mosquito-net in canvas (pop-up top)
The mosquito-net can be separated from the canvas.
In order to take it out open zipper (top and bottom) of the
mosquito-net. On both sides the mosquito-net can be taken
off the velcro-fastener."
