Sometime within the past 2 years some one posted an e-mail which had a link
to pictures of a neatly-done, aftermarket tube muffler installation which he
had fabricated.  He did it for the same reasons you mention.  From what I
saw, the only thing cheap about his work was the cost of the muffler.  I wish
I could tell you more, but I tried searching the "archives" with no luck.
Perhaps he, whoever it is, will reply with the details.
