Subject:Re: diesel tranny question

No diesel autos were ever made, probably for the following reasons:

a) an auto's torque converter takes away some power, and with only 50 hp you
don't want that, and
b) a diesel only has a small power band. A typical early 80s auto tranny has
only 3 gears so combined with the small power band you would not get enough
power at enough speeds.

In Europe, for the diesel Eurovan, a 4-speed automatic was available for the
2.4 l NA 5-cylinder, and since a year or two for the 2.5 TDi (100 hp version).
