That residue is caused by blow by from the engine. It is a moisture of some fuel, oil and water vapor. If the sludge is getting into the AFM than you should check the engine for excessive blow-by, (leak down test). This can also be caused by short trip driving, excessive oil level RPMs etc. Dennis -----Original Message----- From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com]On Behalf Of Chad G Sent: Sunday, September 09, 2001 8:16 PM To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: Throttle valve housing question...... As an attempt to remedy crap fuel mileage I took a look inside my throttle valve housing (I've done everything else I could do..........replaced the following: 02 sensor, both temp sensors, thermostat, H2O pump, plugs, wires, distributor and rotor, air filter, cleaned FI grounds) and notice an oily gas puddle inside of it. WHY WHY WHY...........is it supposed to be like that???? there was also a bit of the same inside the AFM...... help Chad 85GL
