First time I've had to look at the list in DAYS... Sorry to chime in so late. Stan, the ball/spring arrangement in the OE filter mount is a relief valve that allows oil to bypass the filter in the event of filter restriction or VERY cold weather. This relief valve should be PLUGGED when installing the sandwich adapter. The sandwich adapter has its own relief valve, which has a tougher spring and therefore a higher relief pressure. This is necessary because line resistance in the oil hoses and cooler(s) can raise the pressure enough to cause the OE relief valve to open and oil to bypass the cooler. We use a shallow 5/8" freeze plug, pressed directly into the opening for the OE valve, from the bottom. We just tap it in with a drift. This plug used to be part of the kit supplied by manufacturers of oil cooler kits like RVEECO and Gandalf's Garage. It's available at any good FLAPS. I installed the additional cooler by using an Empi sandwich type adapter that goes between the oil filter and the original filter mount. I've got a question: I noticed that the sandwich adapter and the original oil filter mount both have check valves in them. Does this dual check valve scenario present any problems?. Seems to me that they would hardly ever even get into sync except at high pressure.
