The DK and DM share the same gear ratios except for the final drive. The DM
diesel 4 speed is essentially an aircooled transmission with a lower
ring/pinion ratio, different bellhousing, and different input shaft. It is
a very simple task to install the diesel specific parts into a DK
transmission. You can do it in your driveway with no special tools.

Subject: Correct Tranny?

Volks,

I am in the middle of putting a 1989 Jetta Digifant I4 engine in an 82
Diesel and from what I read the transmission of choice is one out of an
1980-83 Air Cooled Vanagon. The way I read Bentley it looks like I need a
tranny with a "DK" code on it?

Has anyone ever come across a air cooled unit in a "DM" case? I purchased a
tranny from someone locally who says its from an Air Cooled Van, it
definitely has an Air Cooled Bellhousing (starter mounted to side), but it
is marked with "DM" code letters, making it a Diesel Tranny? (I think).

If this is not an Air Cooled Tranny does anyone have a good used unit for
sale?

Thanks for you help,

Joe
