Jay,
Upon further review, Haynes says yes: the brown/white (1.0mm) is Right
Front speaker negative. At 0.5mm, the Brown/Red (to Ignition Relay)
should be half the size of the speaker wiring.
No brown wires involved with the antenna; there's the aerial itself,
then an optional 0.5mm (black) control to power booster relay. You
didn't mention it, but if you've got a tiny (0.35mm) Green/Yellow as
well, it ties into the idiot light circuit through the Fresh Air
switch. Lastly, yes Grey/Blue is dimmer; it can tie into any nearby
dimmable hot.
Let me know if you need the speaker wiring. It's very
straightforward, with a separate pair to each corner and the factory
Golf tweeter/woofer separates wired in series at each corner. The
only unusual thing in the whole harness is that, in the Golf, the Left
Rear wiring changes from Red/Green, Brown/Black (+,-) to Blue/Green,
Brown/Red in the middle of the run. This shouldn't affect you if
you're using the vanagon's existing speaker runs.

Subject: '97 VW Stereo Install
I am looking at the power wire harness for the '97 VW stereo that is
going
into my '85 Westy. Is has a large red/white wire, a large brown wire,
a
small grey/blue wire, a small brown/white and a small brown/red. The
large
red is 12VDC always hot. The large brown is ground. The grey/blue is
the
dimmer (instrument light) supply. The other two small brown wires I
am not
sure. I believe one is for the amplied antenna and the other for ?
Maybe
ground for antenna? Can anyone verify this info? The harness was
picked
up at a junkyard and came out of a '97 Golf, identical to the stereo
donor
car (my son's '97 K2).
Any help appreciated. I will be installing tonight. By the way, it
fits
perfectly into the dash. You do need the DIN style antenna, or an
adapter
(which is what I am using).
