Joel,

It all depends on crush space in the front, and the
Vanagon doesn't have much.  I'd hate to get into a
head on with any full sized SUV.  I wish I knew how to
design a removable front bush catcher piece for the
Vanagon like you see on 4X4 trucks.  If designed right
it would add a lot of crush space and improve front
crash safety.  Instead of a bush catcher, it would be
an SUV catcher.
