My '85 Jetta adjusters started to crap out around 250k km on original drums, even with new pads. I finally replaced the entire rear brake assemblies with those from a low mileage Golf at around 350k km, and the adjusters are *much* better now. The system seems to become more sensitive to hand brake cable adjustments as the drums wear down also. I haven't had the drums off my Westy in 5 years, and they were replaced by PO, so they seem to adjust fine for now.
