The biggest problem with that is that the normally aspirated diesel put into the Vanagon isn't made to be turbocharged: block isn't as stout, no oil sprayed under the pistons for cooling, etc. These engines can be turbocharged, but the wastegate bypass pressure has to be set low, so as not to destroy the engine. In short, you won't be able to utilize the full potential of the blower (assuming it's in working condition in the first place). As was mentioned previously, it makes more sense to replace the whole engine with a real factory turbodiesel. I have the TD from a Quantum in my Westie, and the improvement is amazing. Lots of power, but very frugal at the pump, unlike those thirsty gas burning vans :-) Mike Moery, Anchorage, AK ---------------- ||E[__] [__]|[_]\\ | =======| - || * * * =( o )--------( o )= =='Ol Bessie '82TD Westy -----Original Message----- From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of Pat Dooley Sent: Thursday, November 08, 2001 7:45 PM To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: Re: ebay Diesel turbo unit: how much work? Interesting to see what this thing goes for. I have 3 of them sitting in my garage with the intake and exhaust manifolds. Even have an exhaust mani off a diesel quantum for chrissakes. > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com]On Behalf > Of Gnarlodious > Sent: Thursday, November 08, 2001 11:28 PM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: ebay Diesel turbo unit: how much work? > > > Item: > http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item= > 597594585& > r=0&t=0 > How much work to install '83 Diesel Vanagon? > > Rachel http://www.gnarlodious.com >
