I don't know if it's relevant for the standard trans, but a VW service
bulletin from June 15, 1993 says the oil in the final drive of automatic
transmissions 010,087,089,090,096,and 098 should be replaced with SAE
75W/90 synthetic.  The Mobil One that I put in mine recently has this
spec and it also says GL-5.
