Don't they sell these type nets at FLAPS places. Cant they be folded or cut or modified to fit the roof? I find new bungee stuff to work better as the rubber tends to deteriorate with time. When wind and stress are a factor go new. Who wants to stop to pick up luggage or deal with damage from road or to cars behind. Also How about lashing a piece of canvas over the load up top instead.
