Subject:'86 vs '88 and up WBX 2.1L HP

The '86 WBX is factory rated at 90 HP@4800 RPM
The  '88 WBX is factory rated at 90 HP@5200 RPM (If I remember the exact RPM
correctly)

Question:

What causes this difference?  The wider powerband of the newer motor seems
more desirable.
