On the (watercooled) Vanagon it's like this: All the levers perform single functions, i.e. they open or close one thing. Top lever -- open to the right -- opens the defrost vents in the dash. #2 lever -- open to the right -- opens the hot-water valve. #3 lever -- opens to the left -- opens the foot-level vents under the dash. #4 lever -- opens to the left -- opens the fresh-air vents at the turn of the roof in the main cabin. Left and right dashboard vents each have their own shutoff at the vent. Opening any set of vents takes away from the volume delivered by any others that are opened. That's all there is. No cross-linkages, no blending, no cams, levers, vacuum switches, no way to recirculate air (except the A/C and rear heater, which have no connection to the ventilation system as such). david -- David Beierl - Providence, RI http://pws.prserv.net/synergy/Vanagon/ '84 Westy "Dutiful Passage" '85 GL "Poor Relation"
