There were never any automatic syncros.  Do you have a cushion over your
engine lid?  Does the middle seat back fold forward (you will see a small
lever on the side of the seat facing the sliding door)?  If so you have a GL.
 If you don't have these features then as Chris Turner would say, you have a
"Non-GL" Vanagon.
