my van (blue 84 gl) has sort of a dent/crease put
there by the previous owner. had a red streak on the
sliding door. until it got painted over

(i was repainting other parts of the van and used
leftover paint to fix the scratch)

i'd say the wheel well smashing is pretty common.

only damage i ever did to the van myself was to clip
the end of the bumper against a wall, trying to get
out of a tight spot. tore off the bumper endcap and
made the bumper (old metal ones wiht plastic caps)
kind of 'wavy'. this was at school, when i was
entirely too tired to be driving, but sometimes you
just gotta make it. luckily one of my freinds there
had a rubber mallet which i used to bang the bumper
straight again. I got a new endcap from the bus depot.
