In the Bentley manuel  under Body Accessories 66.3... It describes how to cut
off a portion of
the stop tabs  on the mirror drive plate This says 86 but this procedure may
work for
your 84 . Check it out. I had to use this on my 86GL to get my passenger side
to adjust to my liking.
