I am new to the list so Greetings to all. It had been some years since I changed hoses on a Vanagon and I forgot to "bleed" the system when I recently removed the alternator bracket to fix a stripped stud. I had to empty the system in order to remove the water pipe that goes across the engine in front of the bracket. While driving it afterwards it heated up a little and for some odd reason corrected or bled itself as I haven't had a temperature problem since. Lucky me. I don't know about anyone else's van but there is no mistaking when my cooling fan is on. When I've been driving it and I shut the engine off it runs a while afterwards. On a funny note, the last time I bled the system, some "expert" told me I had to jack the front of the van 3 FEET OFF THE GROUND! I used a Handy Man "High Lift" jack that time. I have found out since that 4 inches will do.
