Thanks to all of you who have given great advice throughout the morning.
I have since counter offered the seller with $1800, he did not budge
from his $2281 with tax. So... I told him to call me if he changes his
mind. I doubt it, but he may change his mind when the vanagon is still
sitting on his lot a few days or weeks or months from now.
 
I hope to find the right Vanagon someday, and I have the luxury of not
being in a hurry.
