And I think you can check them by going to a parking lot, and driving in a slow circle with the steering wheel all the way one direction, then all the way the other direction. I know this works for front CVs (i.e. on a syncro or a FWD car), but don't know if it will put enough strain on the rears to make them sound off. If it works, and they're bad, they'll clunk-clunk-clunk as you go around in circles. bmc :) "Faith will move mountains, but you'd better bring a shovel...." > From: MDC Vanagon <vanagon@SPEAKEASY.ORG> > Reply-To: MDC Vanagon <vanagon@SPEAKEASY.ORG> > Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2002 10:02:45 -0800 > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Re: 1983.5 with 108,000 miles > > CV joints would be my best guess... and it's only a guess... > > I'm assuming that this happens when you're traveling at high speed son the > highway or when traveling up hill. > > I had the same thing happen to me on a long road trip through two mountains > passes between Seattle, WA and Sebastopol, CA. > > You might want to look there... > > > Myles > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com]On Behalf > Of Norman Owen Tomalin > Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 9:22 AM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: 1983.5 with 108,000 miles > > > My 1983.5 water cooled 1.9L Camper developed a regular progressively louder > knocking and vibration emanating from the vicinity of the left rear wheel. > Which disappeared when depressing the clutch pedal and was not a permanent > ailment.
