I can't say they are really any brighter, but when used in the E code housings they put out a different pattern which appears much brighter. I have original E code H4s in my 1973 European panel van, and I upgraded the '74 Westy with the same. It made a world of difference. Some western states allow the use of H3 or H4 bulbs for auxiliary lighting. Some people read a little farther into this and believe they can legally replace their DOT headlights with E code. Don't confuse the H4 bulb with the E code lamp housings. I doubt you would ever get pulled over for using the E code lamps unless you are running the 85W bulbs. My next project is to install the E code lamps in my '93 Weekender. Steve Lashley SKL Enterprises Inc. http://EuroCampers.com 636-797-9015 636-789-2127 fax
