If you want to see what's involved in pulling the tranny to replace the main seal and o-ring, I have an article online at http://volksweb.relitech.com/clutch.htm I haven't had the time to finish the article and detail how to get the tranny back in, so how about I use the old Clymer manual standard line, "Installation is the reverse of steps 1-15". :) TomC tcarrington@relitech.com http://volksweb.relitech.com http://checkerweb.relitech.com 85 VW Vanagon Crew Cab 82 VW Westy Diesel=>Gas Conversion 81 Checker A-11 (Taxi) 65 VW Notchback -----Original Message----- From: developtrust [mailto:developtrust@COX.NET] Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 6:08 PM To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: Dropping tranny to replace main seal and "O" ring I have decided to replace the main seal and "O" ring betweent the engine and trasmission to eliminate the small oil leak I have there. I have found a local shop that will do the whole job, parts and labor, for about $300 in three hours. And a little less at VW Cafe in Santa Cruz if I do it on my way during a trip to N. Calif. However, having a thirst for knowledge, I want to observe and help and see things and decide if the clutch also needs attention. None of my local shops will allow anyone to be in thier shop (due to "insurance" claims.) Not only does this make me suspicious, but I have a need to know. So the dillema is to do it myself and endure another learning process or just trust the mechanic. It is not a matter of money as I can afford to do have it done. I'd like some feedback from people who have done this themselves. I don't mind buying tools and learning, but I'd rather pay someone who has done it and will allow me to participate. Any advice?
