I have an '85 as well and live in the Shennandoah Valley where the wind tends to whip up at times.  I had wind problems when I first got my van, too.  A semi passing me made me death-grip the steering wheel.

Then, I found out that the right tires are REALLY important on vanagons.  The previous owner had put cheap passenger car tires on it before he sold it.  I put on Michelin Agilis 61's and haven't had a problem since.

By the way, I found a local tire dealer that sold them to me installed for less than the lowest online price before shipping.  Just thought I'd gloat...
