I had a water seal leak at the right side head on my '87 vanagon pass. van (stick) that persisted for some time. Hot or cold, running or not, I was losing a couple of quarts every 2 or 3 days. No oil or water mixing, compression O.K. in all 4 (180K mile on this one.) I can't afford at this time to take this thing out of service for repair, so I reasoned that if the motor was coming out anyway I couldn't make matters much worse if the pepper screwed things up. So... I put about 2 tablespoons of table pepper in with one of my coolant replenishments about a week ago. Starting the following morning, the leak stopped, and I haven't had to add another drop of coolant to this one since. Everything seems to operate normally, no overheating, front and rear heat work fine, etc. I'll post with progress reports or if anything changes. Vanagon On!
