Say what you will about NJ, but when I lived there we had to go through a yearly smog check and a safety check. The safety check included driving the car onto pads and jamming on the brakes to see if the brakes were working equally and all. And then all the lights were checked including headlight alignment. One time found out I had a seized rear wheel cylinder on my 58 Olds that really didn't show itself in routine driving. I appreciated the heads up. Point is it surprizes me that here in CA there is absolutally no safety inspection. Not even a check to see if brake lights or headlights work--nothing. I suppose you could get pulled over and spot checked, but I've never met anyone who was subject to a spot check. And if I had a nickle for every car out here with no license plate lights I'd be driving a Synchro. Back east that was good for traffic stop and a ticket. Heck, you can drive out here without license plates and not get stopped. And the I'm not CA bashing, it just seems a safer driving environment could be created if the state performed safely checks. I've got half a mind to write Jane Fonda and see if she has Tom Hayden's address. (one of my neighbors stopped by to tell me his old girlfriend used to work for Jane Fonda and Jane had a Vanagon--the accuracy of this report has not been verified--you out there Jane? ) My point is it's odd how state inspections change from state to state. I think Nevada smog statute merely states no visible smoke. Hmmm Luckly my vehicles have passed here in CA regardless of the heritage of the vehicle or the person doing the emissions test.
