Should be the last 6 digits of the VIN.  THe letter is part of the year
code.  The Bentley has a pretty good description of it.  My '85 has an "F"
in there and is 053XXX at the end.  (Chassis 53,XXX.)   Good to know, as VW
will make major changes on the fly.  Model years mean nothing.
