My "Pocket Mechanic" Vanagon manual (I know, I know, not the best book, but it was cheap) says that there are resetting pliars made for pushing the pistons back into the brake calipers (while the calipers are still on the rotor) in order to install new pads. When I called auto parts stores they tried to hook me up with a C-clamp. And they've ever heard of being able to install new pads without removing the calipers from the rotor. I got the job done without the pliers, but it was not easy. Is there really any such thing as these resetting pliars? deb '85 Westy "Gypsy"
