You might be interested to know that I brought the van to my local vw mechanic yesterday after really warming up the car, and we did a sniffer test (exhaust gas in the coolant) and it came up negative. Also he pulled the plugs and saw no sign of coolant buildup. I think Ken Wilfey (and others) might be right in their assumption that there is sludge in the radiator.
