Subject:Oil Leaks

Dear All

I have purchased an 81 Westy with an aircooled engine. The engine has had

the following work done by a VW garage in the last 6 months:

* All Pushrod tube seals replace

* Rear main seal

* Rocker boxes and seals replaced

* Oil change

The engine is reported to have blowby, but this does not affect the starting

or running and it does not appear to burn too much oil (very faint blue

smoke). The engine has done about 100,000 miles.

Unfortunately, the engine still leaks excessive amounts of oil, and

following shampooing and driving for about 25km is appearing as follows:

* Dripping from oil filter base

* Dripping from base of cast fan housing

* tracking along pushrod tubes

* slight leak from filler tube base

As there are so many leaks it would seem to me that pressure is building in

the case and 'blowing' oil out. It has been back to the garage where the

work was carried out and they say they 'cannot, honestly find where the oil

is coming from'. HELP. Could there be a problem with the crankcase

breather system - the garage says that the blowby is not too much, but I am

not sure.

Regards

Michael Thompson
