I modified an air-cooled Vanagon transmission using the Diesel Bell housing ,pilot shaft, etc. Once the bell housing is off, it's easier to swap shafts than to cut, and ,no measuring needed. Frank, you had to cut the pilot shaft? I am trying to understand why? A freak tranny? Hi all, just finished the third day of work. So far, we've: 1. Pulled the diesel and removed the flywheel, clutch, oil pan, oil pump pickup, and exhaust manifold. 2. Pulled the engine from the donor 1986 Golf (that was a little hard). Also grabbed about half of the hiring harness (more to get tomorrow) and the fuel filter, accumulator, and pump assembly. 3. Transferred the diesel parts and a new pilot bearing to the donor engine. 4. Took a little off of the diesel tranny input shaft with my dremel - hopefully enough. Tomorrow we'll stick it in, hook up the fuel lines, and start figuring out the CIS fuel injection. So far, so good... best, MattGet more from the Web.
