Early railcars were made primarily of wood until a couple of train accidents introduced the world to the horrific results when human bodies meet splintering wood in an accident. You don't want hardwood floors in your van. You'll note now that wood only appears in cars today as thin burl veneers (which disintegrate rather than splinter when crushed), and wood products that are either chipped, or encased in a covering (laminate) to protect the occupants in a crash.
