Hi Dave, I used a 5 gallon plastic can, and it was a mess. Elevation changes and direct sunshine both caused lots of leakage. It's also another 40 pounds up very high. If I were doing it again, I'd invest in a rack for the rear that holds gerry cans or spare tires--the type that swings out easily. One listee said get the one with a left-side hinge for a LHD vehicle, so you don't have to walk around it every time you go from the sliding door to the hatch. I am still trying to locate the tank that fits in the spare and holds 2.5 gallons--for me, that would be plenty of peace of mind. bmc :) "Faith will move mountains, but you'd better bring a shovel...." > From: dave bowers <dave@SPARKPLUG.COM> > Reply-To: dave bowers <dave@SPARKPLUG.COM> > Date: Thu, 9 May 2002 22:16:34 -0700 > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: gas can in your westy cargo area? > > Anybody store a gas can in their Westy storage area? > > If so, what shape/size/material can do you use? > > and > > Do you simply tie it down (i.e. bungie cords), or do you secure so it cannot > be stolen (and how?). > > Just curious.
