Hi one and all,

Duralube, Slick 50, Power Up, Prolong, No mystery oil for me!

A few years ago their was a TV ad for some snake oil. They took a fleet of
various cars that had been treated with an additive like Duralube, Prolong,
Slick 50 or some stuff. The cars had all the oil drained from the
crankcases, They claimed to have run the cars for a long period of time over
a race course with no oil in the motors. All the engines sounded fine and
performed like a new car should while on the course After the test the cars
had their drain plugs reinstalled, refilled with oil and they claim there
was no damage done to any of the motors due to the use of their amazing
product. My point is this. The cars they tested all had hydraulic lifters.
With no oil in the lifters they would collapse and sound like the engine was
coming apart. They would also suffer a lot of power loss since the lifters
would be collapsed thus not allowing the valves to open properly. The TV ad
was a complete con job if you ask me. Lets here your opinions. I'm a firm
believer that an oil change with a high quality oil and oil filter every
3,000 miles, along with sensible driving are the basics for long engine
life.
