Tim,

The Colgan PR65D, which fits round headlight water cooled Vanagons has a 7" x
7" opening for each headlamp and the rest is mesh.

The PR355 for the newer Vanagons has a 7" x 12" opening.

How wide is the headlamp area on the SA grille?

You could always trim the mesh back.  I was thinking the height of the
opening was the main concern.
