There IS a fuel filter before the pump... on some vanagons! my 84
(california model) has the black-cube filter before the pump and the big
aluminum filter after the pump, if i recall correctly. The syncro is a
different story... VW was sure to make sure the fuel filter is hard to
get at by rocks, sticks, hands and tools....
