This one had a 240hp VW aircooled ($2800.00) driving a 14" carbon bladed prop, mounted in the back seat and when a toggle was activated, the rear hatch-lid-window would open, the engine slid out, driven by a huge hydraulic jack, and start up and away it went. Foam-filled compartments both sides, rear and front, all unibody pan holes filled and an aluminum sheet welded to the bottom of the entire "bug". Whattarig! Bob << Anybody happen to see Discovery Channel's coverage of Jesse James (L.A. motorcycle builder/painter extraordinaire) converting a '98 beetle into a water craft? >> There is nothing new about that concept. Many moons ago, more than thirty, Road and Track had an article about a guy who converted a sunroof Beetle to run on water. There was not much to the conversion: he raised the intake and exhaust above the waterline, hung a prop to the ass end through the hand crank hole, opened the sunroof, closed the doors then drove it into the water. Once he was underway, the front wheels turned into rudimentary, but effective, rudders. The sunroof was his flying bridge. He was trying to make a point about the integrity of the Beetle's design and, I guess, turn a few heads.
