I am using the Golf or inline four PS pump and there is no noticeable lack of power steering force.  
It's possible that the lower pressure may even be beneficial to the rack seals, etc.  
And , while I still had the 82 spindles, I didn't notice any hard steering. I noticed the hard steering before I switched to power steering for four years. Now I have to make up for the lack of exercise by doing push-ups and paddling the kayak.
