Before you go back to stock take a look at Bus Depot's
Stainless systems. The 72 to 74 exhaust bolts right on to the
heat exchanngers of non-cat air cooled vanagons. They are
about $200 US.... and no EXPEN$IVE corssover pipe part number
is: 071 251 053EKS.
