Well guys I've wasted a good three hours tearing down the Type IV engine I had with 30,000 miles on it. Here is what I found: #1) Rods Already Notched. #2) Windage tray already installed. #3) Balancing marks on the rods with weight die stamped. #4) Near perfect bearings on all journals. #5) All standard mains and rod journals. #6) Case never align bored. #7) Camshaft shows no wear. #8) Camshaft drive end bearing showing some wear, others like new. #9) Wrist pins still free floating. #10) Discoloration inside the crankcase about like coffee stains. # 11) Stains in the crankcase, carbon on piston tops and oil burn inside the pistons cleaned off with just a good spraying of Berryman B-12. #12) Oil pump gears and housing are like new. #13) All rings floating nicely on the pistons with no broken or crushed lands. Minimal under ring buildup. #14) It appears that all of the sharp edges have also been removed from both the outside and inside of the crank case. My rule has always been assume nothing, so I'll start measuring the crank etc. I should be able to get this engine back together in about six hours baring any delays in pressing on the new cam drive end main bearing. I'm pleased to say the engine is just as good as the PO told me it was, wish he had known that the old timer that had built the engine knew all the VW Type IV tricks or better still had given me his phone number.
