Subject:Alt. belt vs. Pwr Steering belt
From:Carl Hansen
Date:Wed, 31 Jul 2002 02:03:46 -0400

Today I discovered purely out of shear DESPERATION that one CAN run the
power steering belt on the alternator when faced with no alternative.

The alternator froze up today. The weathers hot, it's old, and I was 5
miles from home and well after closing for anything normal that might have
the correct alternator belt.

I dropped in the spare alternator, put on the power steering belt and can
once again get to work tomorro morning. I'll have to get the correct belt
tomorro and swap it out.

Makes one wonder what VW had on their minds when they designed the layout.
The Alternator belt has failed on me 3 times that I can recall - maybe 4,
yet it is the inner most belt and requires removing the other two to
replace!
