If I remember correctly the brakes self adjust when you engage the parking
brake.  It's been a little while though so I could be wrong.

I have a '91 westy that the rear brakes do not self adjust. All the brake
hardware hwre appears OK. Do other Vanagons self adjust by backing up and
appling the brakes?
