I have an 85 vanagon with 140K and the auto tranny is original and still
shifting like it was brand new.

With the auto tranny, I am a little softer and more consistent on the gas
pedal and just let the tranny work.  Hills can get a little slow,
especially with the 1.9L.

Anyway, been very happy with mine.
