Well in winter you will be alright as bears hibernate- most of Alaska is bear country and you shouldn't bring dogs with you on foot into the wild as the dogs could find a bear and then "lead" the bear back to you. There are grizzlys along the Alaska Hwy.I have watched several from the window of a motorhome. When i was a firefighter our crew encountered grizzlies. We had to burn and bury all our refuse daily in order to sleep and wake up in the morning un-eaten. Every snapping twig in the night- I mean twilight, kept my eyes wide open! Everyone has dogs though. Short hair dogs are ok but in the "Interior" they need a warm house to sleep in. I lived in Fairbanks a year and the coldest day that winter was 55 below with no wind.
