Ed,
Lay on your back and look upside down under the drivers side dash...around the fuse box area should be a sticker with a bunch of  numbers, including the paint code (mine is LH8U, beige metallic). 
Look on www.paintscratch.com ( a tip from another listee)  in the VW Vanagon dept and you will get an idea of which code denotes the color. Their paint matched my van exactly and the instructions they send are idiot-proof...I saved some extra $$ by not ordering their clear coat, but instead getting it at my local FLAPS.
