In California, the tags stay with the vehicle when it changes ownership. (I
know, as I've purchased both of my Syncros in California and driven them
across the country.) With a bill of sale and the title for the vehicle you
should be fine, until you get back home (as long as your home state doesn't
have any problems with you not getting it registered for a couple of weeks.)

Your insurance company should be notified pretty early, just to cover
yourself.
