On Stans web site he has in the valve adjusting procedure a step about removing #1 spark plug and inserting a piece of wire in order to determine TDC. I am inclined to just pop off both valve covers, pop off the distributor cap, note which cylinder the rotor tip is close to pointing to, then turning the engine until that cylinder is at TDC by using the mark on the pulley or 180 degrees opposite, whichever applies. That is how I do my type 1. Then you can watch the valves open and close as you rotate the engine to do the other valves, to double check that the valves are opening and closing when they are supposed to. Also what is the purpose of running the engine for a minute with the valve covers off before you do the adjusting? Is it to pump up the lifters?
